Always Come Evening
Published in Hardcover by Ultramarine Pub Co (June, 1977)
Author: Robert E. Howard
Average review score:

I Don't Want to Imagine Poetry That Could Be Darker
I have been a fan of Robert E. Howard's fiction for years. And poetry is not my thing. But this short little collection (110 pages) blew me out of the water. The darkness that lurked in Howard's brain is nowhere more evident. Some of these poems are the horror or warrior songs you would expect. But some of the horror verses descend into a vision of a prehistoric world ruled by a dark evil for whom humans are but slaves and food.

Going beyond this, we are allowed to delve into Howard's psyche itself and the brooding hopelessness that dwelt there beneath the outward bluster. And then there are the death songs. Especially "The Tempter" which brought me to near tears with the realization that Howard had contemplated his own self-destruction for years.

"In a shadow panorama
Passed life's struggles and its fray.
And my soul tugged with new vigor,
Huger grew the phantom's figure,
As I slowly pressed the trigger,
Saw the worlds fade swift away."

All I can say is "What a loss, what a waste."

The Best of Howard's Work
The Best of Robert E. Howard. Find it! Beautiful prose excites the mind and stirs the soul.

This rare collection of poems by Howard is RAW POWER.
This difficult to find book is well worth the search. It collects the poems of Conan's creator and binds them into something more powerful than any battlefield could concieve.

Audio cyclopedia

AUDIOcyclopedia
This is the definitive soundman's bible. Any book written on audio in the past forty years has refered to this book for technical terms and definitions for the audio industry. It looks at studies and audio sicence data from the early thirties until it was published in the fities and sixties. It is sad that this book is out of print. It was the first book that lead me to do research leading to reducing the listening fatigue on the human ear created by amplified sound systems.

...If a Techie wants to know where he came from...
This book is a great piece for anyone wanting to understand the basics of sound explained from scratch. Originally published in 1959, revised in 1969, the version I have is from 1978. Acoustics-the science of sound--hasn't changed; but the technology and medium we use has.

This book is a valuable supplement for audio pros. There are sections that show how to build a sound stage like the big boys, for example. A microphone section showing [now vintage] mics dissected. A lot of techncal stuff that modern audio books may water down so that it is easier for the novice to comprehend. This book is the real thing, and I'm sure the seasoned audio pros went to this book for information.

State of the art at the time it was written, this important history is still applicable today.

Exactly what the title says: an audio encyclopedia
The most complete audio reference for all sound entusiasts. Unfortunately the book doesn't cover the latest discoverings of computer age (1977 was the last edition). But it is a book that MUST be in a serious audio techniccian shelf.

Barnaby and Me
Published in Hardcover by Gray & Co., Publishers (November, 1999)
Authors: Linn Sheldon, Nat Howard, Mike Olsiewski, Richard Osborne, and Ed Walsh
Average review score:

THIS BOOK BRINGS BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES
I GREW UP WATCHING BARNABY FOR MANY YEARS AS A SMALL FRY. HE WAS AND STILL IS ONE OF MY HEROES. LINN SHELDON DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HIS LIFE, CAREER, AND ADVENTURES IN SHOW BIZ. HE IS VERY CREATIVE, HUMOROUS, DETAILED, AND WITTY. HE WRITES WITH CLASS AND DIGNITY. HIS TELLING OF THE DARK SIDE OF HIS LIFE (ALCOHOLISM) IS VERY HONEST, TOUCHING, AND HUMOROUS. I AM A RECOVERING ONE MYSELF. I CAN IDENTIFY WITH HIS FEELINGS AND EXPERIENCES. THIS IS A VERY TOUCHING LOOK AT A VERY LOVING AND CREATIVE MAN WHO BROUGHT A LOT OF JOY TO MANY CHILDREN IN CLEVELAND OVER A FEW DECADES. VERY VERY RECOMMENDED.

Barnaby & Me
Although it is about the life of a television performer, one who was a pioneer in the industry, I feel that this book is an easy read, fun, and hard to leave alone...I find myself referring to favorite chapters many, many times. This is not a book about Cleveland, it is a book about everyone. Someone should do a musical or movie about this author.

Beautifully written stories about a remarkable life
Like millions of others in this region, I grew up watching Barnaby on TV. Linn Sheldon was on television for 32 years as Barnaby, the elfin-eared pal of children and parents alike. Left to fend for himself at the age of seven, he lived by his wits and with the kindness of sympathetic citizens in Norwalk, Ohio. As a teenager he hitchhiked across America playing the banjo for meals, spent three years on the MGM lot, and returned to the Cleveland area to begin a career as actor and standup comic. In 1948 he joined WEWS-TV in Cleveland, the first TV station in the region, and his accounts of early televion are fascinating. In time his fame spread well beyond Cleveland to Westinghouse TV markets, and he did extensive work in Texas as well. As his career developed, so did his need for alchohol. He made and lost a fortune, married four times, and had serious bouts with depression. His stories about his drinking days and his brushes with the psychiatric community are at once moving and hilarious. Now retired and healthy again, he looks back on his life with the same kind of joy and sensitivity he imbued in the character of Barnaby. Reading it made me feel like a kid again enthralled with the musings of this wonderful elf.

Becoming Free : A New Look at the Ancient Lesson : A Haggadah for Passover
Published in Paperback by Granite Hills Press (March, 1999)
Authors: Howard S. Rubenstein and Judith S. Rubenstein
Average review score:

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HAGGADOT
one "of the most important" haggadot.... teaching that the traditional "celebration of Passover has led to complacency in dangerous times, like the Holocaust, that lulled us into a sense of freedom we did not have" (Mr. Steingroot's review comes from his book KEEPING PASSOVER.)

A HAGGADAH FOR CHILDREN AND SCHOLARS
"Children friendly.... [and yet] the Preface is an education in itself.... It can be studied at any time of the year, and it will provide a number of concepts of how the entire body of knowledge of Judaism should or could be studied". [Mr. Marshall's review belongs to the public domain.]

WONDERFUL!
"a wonderfully innovative haggadah"

Chaos Chip
Excellent mystery novel. Intriguing characters...would make a great movie!

Chaos Chip - A thrilling novel
This is the most thrilling book I've ever read. It's a mystery laced with fascinating characters and a depth unexpected in mystery books. It held my interest to the end. It includes vivid discriptions and dialogue. I read it over a second time.

It's an awesome read. I couldn't put it down.
I have read a lot of books in my life and this is one of the best. The mystery and intrigue keeps you turning the page. There are just enough red herrings to keep you thinking and I didn't know "who dun it" until almost the end. The scene explanation of the Bavarian Alps makes you feel as though you are there and part of the story. Mudrock McCabe is a fascinating guy who is a thinker. Enrique is a character that you are not sure of his motives. The characters are well defined and the story is tight. Read it. You won't be disapointed.

Cityscapes
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 November, 2001)
Authors: Howard B. Rock, Deborah Dash Moore, and David Lobenstine
Average review score:

A trip through time
The day Cityscapes arrived brought me back to the city of my childhood and of my family and closest friends. Page after page of wonderful photographs, of history remembered and learned yet again. So many places visited with my elementary school field trips and then revisited years later on my brief stays in New York. Cityscapes offers a visual feast as well as an intellectual journey to places and people seen years ago, but only now understood in historical context.

A month or so after I fell into Cityscapes, I was delighted to host a young couple from New York. They saw the book on my coffee table and picked it up. Hours later, the two of them were still pouring over the book, learning new and fascinating slices of urban life in their recently adopted city.

Just as New York offers something for everyone, Cityscapes brings light to the eyes of anyone who opens its cover and enters its world.

The Ultimate New York
There is no place like New York, and there is no book about New York like this one. As revealing as the superb choice of photos, sketches and maps are, so is the narrative story linked with the visual: colonial seaport blossoming into a republican town, fragmented city becoming the immigrant metropolis, and finally the cosmopolitan community and global village we celebrate today. The authors have opened for us vista after vista and close-up after close-up of the poignancy and power of this magnificently restless, creative and changing Empire City.

A Beautiful Book!
The destruction of the World Trade Center has altered the New York City skyline forever and has forced people to confront a new image of New York. The next generation of New York observers will only know the Towers from their images - several magnificant ones appear in this book's final chapter.

Cityscapes is more than just a history of New York City and it is more than simply a book of beaufitul pictures. It is a unique social history that explores the timely question of how New York, the City, has been both constructed and reflected in images captured over four hundred years.

So far, this is my favorite book of New York City history.
